Monmouth Downhill Derby 2017
It was downhill derby time again on Saturday!
Originally started in 2001 by former Police Chief Gary Morefield, the Downhill Derby provides an opportunity for children to interact with police officers in a positive environment. Over 500 kids have participated since its inception. Sponsors now also include the Monmouth Fire Department, the Monmouth VFW, and the Maple City Street Machines.
Sixty to eighty kids participate in this fun event, which is open to all third, fourth and fifth grade students at Monmouth-Roseville schools and Immaculate Conception School.
South Sunny Lane Road Ribbon Cutting
We had a ribbon cutting for the South Sunny Lane road reconstruction & drainage control project today. This project was primarily funded by the private sector and was a great example of public/private partnership. Contributions from Big River Resources, West Central FS and a local foundation helped us to bring a new and improved road designed for the maximum weight limit of any vehicle.
Housing Study Input
Why do you live in Monmouth or why do you choose to live elsewhere? Are you happy with your current housing? What kinds of housing should be available in the city in the future?
These are some of the questions the City of Monmouth would like residents and workers to answer on a survey it is conducting. The survey, intended for anyone living or working in Monmouth, will be available to complete online over the next several weeks. Copies also can be picked up at Monmouth City Hall. All responses will be held confidential and only summary information will be included in discussions that will shared with the public at a later date.
“Monmouth has a variety of kinds of housing available, but perhaps not everyone who would like to live here can find what they are looking for,” said Lew Steinbrecher, City Administrator. “The City will use the information gained from the survey to develop strategies to bring additional quality housing to the community and plan for improvements that strengthen the area as a place to live.”
The Center for Governmental Studies at Northern Illinois University is assisting in conducting the survey. Take the survey by going to http://bit.ly/COMstudy or go to http://bit.ly/COMstudyes for a Spanish language version. For additional information contact Lew Steinbrecher at 309-734-2141.
New Energy Efficient Street lighting
Our contractors at C & D Electric & Lee's Tree Service have been changing out some of the lights around the intersections with energy efficient LEDs. A number of them were in need of repair so it was good timing when Ameren Illinois announced a program to help subsidize their replacement. They do also offer a number of programs for residential and businesses at www.amerenillinoissavings.com
Two MPD Officers promoted
At this weeks City Council meeting we promoted two of our officers.
